Holly Woodlawn | Original Art | Trans History | Gouache | 6 in x 9 in

$60.00

This year to celebrate Women’s History Month I decided I wanted to create a series of paintings of influential Trans women. With the laws being passed around the United States right now, it felt particularly important to honor our Trans elders.

I also wanted to support the LGBT+ individuals currently in Ukraine. 60% of the proceeds of these original pieces will be donated to Insight Ukraine. I really do wish I could donate 100% of the proceeds but I am not at a point where I am able to eat the cost of these prints and shipping them. Maybe someday!

Holly Woodlawn (1946 – 2015) was a transgender American actress who appeared in the films Trash and Women in Revolt. She is also known as the Holly in Lou Reed’s hit glam rock song “Walk on the Wild Side”.

Woodlawn was born in Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico, to a German-American father, and Aminta Rodriguez, a native Puerto Rican, and grew up in Miami Beach, where she came out at a young age. In 1962, at the age of fifteen, Woodlawn ran away from home, leaving Florida and moving to New York City.

In the mid-sixties through the seventies, she acted in various plays and movies, in rolls of varying sizes.

During the 1990s, Woodlawn achieved a modest film and theatrical comeback, making cameo appearances in various productions.

In 1999 she was in a controversial film about conjoined twins who live in a rundown motel in a small town. She also acted in Transparent, a U.S. television series about a transgender mother played by Jeffrey Tambor.

Woodlawn died of brain and liver cancer in Los Angeles on December 6, 2015.
